What’s happening on the Leitha? That was the focus of the excursion on Sunday, 30 March 2025. 33 nature-loving participants set off in spring-like weather and a great atmosphere to explore the LIFE IRIS project ‘Reconnection of the Gattendorf oxbow lake’ up close.

From the meeting point at the barbecue area in Gattendorf, experts Hannes Wild (Office of the Provincial Government of Burgenland) and Hermann Frühstück (Head of VBNO Burgenland) led the tour along the reconnected oxbow lake – into a piece of nature that is currently reinventing itself.

They provided fascinating insights into the planning and realisation of the pilot project and the history of the Leitha regulations. Future revitalisation measures and their significance for nature, the environment and the region were also discussed.

During the tour of the reconnected oxbow lake, it became clear how important river landscapes are for biodiversity, the water balance, flood protection – and not least for our recreation.

The feedback from the event was very positive. The participants were satisfied with the implementation of the measure and welcomed the nature-oriented development of the area.
