On June 24, 2026, the IRIS measure on the Pielach was officially opened. Thanks to the revitalization measures, the Pielach is regaining more space between Ober-Grafendorf and Weinburg. In the future, the river’s natural processes will drive dynamic river development. At the same time, the measures are sustainably improving flood protection.

New Habitats Along the Pielach

The structuring measures along the river create diverse habitats for animals and plants. Step by step, the river reclaims its space, and for us humans, this creates a place where we can enjoy nature and water in all their facets.

Numerous Guests at the Opening

It was wonderful to see so many important representatives from politics, administration, and practice accept the invitation of the Pielach Water Association to the official opening of the IRIS pilot measure on the Pielach: a clear sign of the project’s importance for the region and for water and flood protection in Lower Austria.

Guests included, among others:

• Representative of the Federal Ministry, Mr. Jakob Schrittwieser
• Provincial Councillor Anton Kasser, representing Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner
• The mayors of the municipalities of Ober-Grafendorf and Weinburg
• Representatives of the regional fishing associations
• The responsible experts and project managers from the Hydraulic
• Engineering Department of the Province of Lower Austria

Together for Vibrant Rivers

With a total volume of around €4.6 million, the pilot measure on the Pielach sets a strong example for nature, water, and flood protection in Lower Austria. The broad participation at the opening ceremony shows how many people and institutions stand behind this project and will accompany and support it on its continued path.
